5th Circuit Upholds Injunction Against Obama's Immigration Plans

More than a year ago, President Obama proposed using new legislation and his executive actions to grant deportation relief to approximately 5 million illegal, undocumented immigrants across the country. The notion, despite sparking immediate controversy from political parties and governmental groups, seemed to be picking up steam. That is, up until the Texas Supreme Court filed an official injunction against his actions, effectively creating a lawsuit representing the state and 25 others.

Even more recently, the U.S. Court of Appeal's Fifth Circuit has upheld the injunction in a 2 to 1 decision of judges. Now that the immigration plans have been halted yet again, the only hope for the immigrants in question is the Supreme Court.

In order to actually keep Obama's plans on the track they were originally intended, the Supreme Court will need to see the case and overrule the injunction before his final term has ceased. Unfortunately for the immigrants, it is not scheduled to start reviewing the Fifth Circuit's judgement until summer of 2016, providing a narrow window to analyze and judge the case before Obama's successor is sworn into office. If the next president disagrees with the immigration policies proposed, they could shut down the plan entirely.

Uncertain Futures for Millions

In the meantime, immigrants all across the country are afraid they may be taken away from their families and removed from their sense of wellbeing. For many, they could be deported despite having children born within the country, a steady career, or both.

Regardless of how this ongoing story of injunctions and immigration reform pans out, there may still be hope for a great majority of the illegal immigrants facing deportation. It all comes down to standing up for their rights and utilizing legal measures to protect them, or find other ways to legally stay within the country.
